It’s after the holiday rush and you are looking at getting family photos in January. Is January a good month? What can you expect? When is the best time for family photos in Houston?
Join me as we dive into a monthly series exploring the pros and cons of different months in the greater Houston area.
It’s a question I get asked all the time. As someone who loves green and sunshine and all things warm and summery, I am a Texas girl through-and-through. But I have learned to embrace our wild seasons, unpredictable weather and the changes in our landscape as seasons impact our area. It’s a great season for indoor family sessions and embracing the tall golden grass.
So let’s dive into what there is to love about January!
January in Houston
- At this point in the year, everything has pretty well died back. We have a few things still holding on, and of course our evergreen pines stand tall showing off their color. What I love about January in Houston is finding ways to use what we do have. In the maternity session below, we went with a bold red against the yellow of the plants. It is simply stunning! So while I do love fresh green trees, this look takes on a whole new artistic and emotional level. The feelings are big and real here, and it’s easy to focus on his beautiful mama and not all the things around her.
- The weather can be a little more drab- we have more overcast days mixed in with sunshine. It can be hard to predict what it will be like outside, but the cloud cover lends itself to a moody feeling and more even lighting.
- January is considered to be the coldest month of the year for Houston. The average temp is a high of 60. That can be cold for some- especially if you have littles. So it’s best to play for layers or aim for a slightly warmer day. Despite the temps, if the sun is shining, we can still enjoy a beautiful day outside.
- The rush! There isn’t that big rush to get family photos do for Christmas cards or update family photos. It’s an ideal month for flexibility and having more unhurried time to plan a session. I love January for its slower pace for sure.

Whether you are trying to document a milestone that is time sensitive (think a birthday or maternity session), or you want to try something different, January is still a great month to take photos.
