As a mother and a storytelling photographer based in The Woodlands, TX, I understand how fall family photo season can be a whirlwind of emotions for moms with young kids. Your to-do list is endless, and the anticipation of capturing those precious moments is both thrilling and nerve-wracking. But don’t worry, I’m here to help you and your little ones prepare for a successful photoshoot that is enjoyable, stress-free, and captures the essence of your family’s unique story.
- Choose the Right Time: When scheduling your family photoshoot, consider your children’s routines and energy levels. It is important to book ahead so you get your preferred dates and times- as we get deeper into October, November and December, the sun sets earlier and earlier. Your photographers ideal timing may not work well with young kids, so it’s important to consider booking ahead and discussing all your options. Late afternoons or gold hour times often work best to avoid harsh midday sun and cranky kids.
- Dress Comfortably: Let your kids choose comfortable outfits they feel good in. This will help them feel confident and more at ease during the photoshoot. Avoid scratchy materials and clothes that are too tight. Coordinating colors and styles for the family can create a cohesive look without making anyone feel uncomfortable. All ANP clients have access to FREE styling with Ashley!
- Explain the Process: Talk to your kids about the photoshoot in a fun and positive way. Let them know that it’s going to be an adventure where they get to play and be themselves while the photographer captures their unique personalities.
- Bring Snacks and Toys: Pack their favorite snacks, drinks, and some small toys to keep them occupied and happy during any downtime. It’s a great way to reward them and keep their spirits high.
- Stay Relaxed: Your energy is contagious. If you’re relaxed and having fun, your children are more likely to feel the same way. Don’t stress about perfect poses or forced smiles; instead, encourage your kids to be themselves.
- Capture Real Moments: As a storytelling photographer, I focus on candid shots that capture genuine moments and emotions. Encourage your kids to laugh, play, and be spontaneous. These are the moments that make for the most authentic and cherished photos.
- Incorporate Their Interests: Bring items or props that reflect your kids’ hobbies and interests. Whether it’s a soccer ball, a favorite book, or a stuffed animal, these props can add a personal touch to the photos.
- Be Patient: Children can be unpredictable, and that’s okay! If they become fussy or uncooperative, take a short break, offer a snack, or play a quick game to lift their spirits. Sometimes, these unplanned moments lead to the most heartwarming photos.
- Praise and Positive Reinforcement: Praise your kids for their cooperation and good behavior throughout the photoshoot. Positive reinforcement can go a long way in making the experience enjoyable for them.
- Trust Your Photographer: You’ve chosen a storytelling photographer because you appreciate their ability to capture genuine moments. Trust their expertise and let them guide you through the process. They’ll know how to create a relaxed and comfortable environment for your family.
