Frequently Asked Newborn Photo Questions
Ashley Newman Photography
Newborn photos are some of the most important images you will ever seek to have taken. Having my son is what prompted me to value photography more than I ever had before. It stands to reason that if you have never had a child, you may have questions about a newborn session or how the photos work. I know I did before Eli was born!
There are different type of photographers- from posed to lifestyle and everything in between. It”s important to talk to your photographer about what you may be looking for, what to expect and how to prepare before your session.
My approach to newborn photography is much more natural and organic (so no posing your baby on a bean bag, but rather baby-led posing instead). I prefer to focus on your connections and relationships as a family, plus all the tiny details of your baby.
Booking a Newborn Session

What is lifestyle photography? It’s the heartbeat of your family! It’s all about capturing images that reveal a story. It’s candid yet directed and posed at the same time. But mostly, it’s emotive photography that focuses on relationships and family. It is less about composing an image of everyone looking at the camera and smiling, and more about the story of your family.

I’m super awkward/nervous/never in front of the camera. Help! Don’t worry! That’s part of my job! I’m here for you every step of the way. From planning and styling your sessions to posing and guidance. I got your back!
-
How do I book? That’s the easy part! We book your due date and then plan around that after the baby comes.
-
Where do we take the pictures? I have spent years finding and securing private locations as well as scoping out the best public spaces. Once you are booked, I will share all my locations with you and help you pick the one that best fits your vision for your session. For those that would prefer inside, I can easily come to your house and help you prepare for an in-home session.
-
How long until I get my pictures? The big reveal- right? It’s my favorite too! You will get a sneak peek of your photos 1-2 weeks after your session and your final gallery in 3-4 weeks.
-
How early should we reserve a date? It’s best to book when you are absolutely comfortable and ready. Most families book around between 20-30 weeks, but some book as soon as they know! I am generally booked out about a 1-2 months in advance and reserve a date around your due date.
As you begin to prepare to bring a new life into this world, thinking about how you document that and share your story us important. Let’s talk about your newborn story today!
