Spring has sprung and it’s time for bluebonnet and wildflower sessions! I know it doesn’t feel like these beautiful flowers are about to pop up, but I promise it’s coming. Every year, I feel like the world turns neon green overnight and flowers begin to push through the dirt announcing the end of winter. It’s my favorite time of the year and one of the busiest!
Since families from all over will be looking for bluebonnet fields and photographers to take photos in them, I wanted to take the chance today to talk about what to expect for your bluebonnet session. I know it doesn’t seem like there should be much to discuss- they are just flowers after all. But some careful considerations are worth taking a look at as we gear up for photos.
What to expect at your bluebonnet session:
-
Be flexible- no one can truly predict when flowers will bloom. Typically I book dates and then additional dates around those so I can get photos with the flowers in peek bloom. Every year it has been different.
-
Be patient- waiting for the right time to get your bluebonnets photos is key- while we want to rush it and get out there and enjoy them, it does take a lot of time and effort to search for good field and monitor blooms. Trust your photographer and their timing.
-
Be respectful- if you do not plan to hire a photographer no big deal! Always ask permission before trespassing on property. Do not go onto property if you are unsure or admire from a distance.
-
Be safe- I know those long stretches of bluebonnets in medians and on the side of the road are so pretty, but pretty please do not get out there with your kids while cars go whizzing by. It’s just not safe.
-
Have mindful feet and hands- talk with your children about respecting the flowers and try not to stomp on them. If someone has already created a spot within the flowers to sit, continue to use the same space. Leave no trace when you are finished taking photos.
-
Watchful eyes- make sure not to run into the patches. Ants and snakes just love these flowers!
Professional photographers all over Houston work hard to find viable bluebonnet patches and fields. A responsible photographer will make sure the spot is safe, that they have permission, and that your family gets the best blooms.

March 3, 2023 at 2:17 pmHey there! So far there are only a few sparse patches blooming in and around Houston. All my bluebonnet minis are sold out at the moment, but it is looking like it’s a little early for them. I am guessing in the nest 2-3 weeks.
