At 101 years old, I had the distinct honor of photographing this wonderful soul. Her entire family pitched in, each wanting to make sure to contribute to documenting her legacy. After all, how many can say that the matriarch of their family is 101?
Every year, her clan gathers at the beach. It’s tradition. But on this year, it was less about the beach and far more about soaking in her presence.
It is so very clear how loved she is and how devoted her family is.
I wanted to do her justice and honor her and her family.
We tied the delicate lace at her shoulders, helped her arrange the gown and made sure she had her bible at the ready.
A haze fell over the bay, and as she lowered herself into the chair I had set out for her, she was all too eager to enjoy the view surrounded by family.
Suddenly, every detail felt important. The lines on her precious skin that mark a full life…the rings she’s working on her fingers for as long as anyone can remember…her hands that have held so much…her bible always nearby…her beautiful lips ready to impart wisdom…her presence that just commands your attention.
It’s not easy to think about the passage of time, and yet how beautiful and privileged is the one who gets to witness it. Savor it all.
