The Woodlands Birth Photographer
How To Pick A Birth Photographer
Ashley Newman Photography
As my own children have gotten older, birth has become even more scared and special to me. Photographing births is not something I am able to do full time, but it is something I have a deep passion for and enjoy documenting when the timing works out.
Birth photography is not for everyone- the reactions range from impressed to excited to even shock when I share that it is something I love to do. For me, it takes me back to our own journey and the struggle to get pregnant as well as all the incredible people we met along the way. But for others, it’s an experience they would rather not have captured.
At the end of the day you have to do what is comfortable and best for you. If you are looking for a birth photographer, then birth and the process of bringing a life into this world is something you have likely spent a lot of time thinking about or had a journey getting to. You’ve come to the right place for tips on how to hire someone to photograph your birth!
What To Ask When Hiring A Birth Photographer
- Ask to see a full gallery. You are looking for consistent images and a gallery that tells a story.
- See what kind of births they have attended- what is their experience level and comfort level?
- Check to make sure they have a back up photographer (or what their policy is if they are unable to make it to your birth). If they have a back up photographer, ask to see their work as well.
- Get on the same page. When you talk to them, make sure your goals align. How involved do you need them to be? What images specifically do you want captured? What do you NOT want captured?
- Verify with your team. Ask your doctor, midwife, etc what they allow. I’ve attended home births, hospital births, c-sections, adoptive births…you name it! But every facility and doctor has their own personal policy. It’s best to make sure photography is allowed.
- Ask your photographer what it looks like to work with them and what their process typically looks like.
This family welcomed their rainbow baby into the world and i’m not sure there was a dry eye in the room. It’s a raw, intimate, and beautiful thing to capture and share. I will let this incredible birth speak for itself.
